Who’s organizing your pictures – You or Software?

June 26, 2007

questionThere are two main approaches to organizing your pictures. The first one is done by you, the user, using the folders structure managed by your Operating System (OS). The second one is done by some piece of software that arranges your pictures automatically (i.e Picasa). This debate is quite old and I don’t understand why it keeps going. One reason is users who are afraid of their computers and they believe all the claims of software producers…”automatically sort your pictures”, “find your pictures immediately with one click” and other similar claims. Well, I’ll try to clarify the debate.

2 reasons why you would want an optical viewfinder in your next camera

June 19, 2007

An Optical Viewfinder is just a piece of plastic or glass that allows your frame your picture. It usually sits on top of your camera and doesn’t require any battery to operate. More and more new digital cameras have removed their optical viewfinder. New compact digital cameras have a larger display (digital viewfinder) and no optical viewfinder. The sub-compact cameras have all renounced the optical viewfinder. This is disappointing.

5 reasons I backup my digital pictures frequently

June 16, 2007

CD Backup Do you really need to backup your pictures? The simple answer is YES! I’m hoping to explain why backing up your pictures is so important. Before I bought my first digital camera did I ever worry about backing up my photos? Of course not…I printed all of them and kept the negatives and that was my backup…no need to worry. The thought never went through my mind !

Consider this when buying a new camera

June 5, 2007

I have written a few weeks ago that it is very important to set your camera’s data and time correctly. However, some of the cheap cameras make that somewhat difficult. What do I mean? Well if you buy a cheap camera, the chances are that every time you take out the battery (or batteries) you would have to set the date and time again. This will be very annoying especially if your batteries don’t last very long.
