How many digital pictures do you have? Have you ever counted them? It’s easy! At the end of October 2009 I decided to keep track of how many digital pictures and videos I have on my hard drive. So, I hope to be able to provide an update at the end of each month and show you how many pictures & videos I have, how much space they take and how much space I have left on my main hard drive.

My digital pictures counter for October 2010

  • Pictures & videos: 52,850
  • Number of folders: 3203
  • Total size: 155 GigaBytes(GB)
  • Space remaining: 845 GigaBytes
  • Change from last month: + 1939 files
  • Size change from last month: + 15Gb size

Why the difference from last month?

During October 2010, we took close to 2000 pictures! We did go on a little vacation up the California coast and that accounts for the largest portion of the pictures. Then we went to a pumpkin patch at a local farm. So, you can imagine that we took lots of pictures. The size increased by 15Gb, but now we have a lot more space since we have upgraded our computer and backup system to 1Tb ( Read How to setup your computer for easy backup) .

I am trying to use Picasa more because it’s good photo management software that has slowly been adding support for most image metadata and most of all it’s very easy to use. So, I have been playing with Picasa quite a bit and find it very good…still! I’ll keep reporting on this.

This month I didn’t shoot in RAW format and stuck to the JPG format because I was taking lots of pictures. I’ll try shooting in RAW more. I love how I can change white balance, sharpness and brightness. It’s great but it eats lots of space very quickly. I’ll let you know how this works.

My computer hardware setup

I keep using our new Dell Inspirion 580s after outfitting it with an extra 1Tb internal drive. I have installed all the software we need and set up the daily automatic backup schedule. Everything is running pretty sweetly 🙂

As a summary, my new computer setup is as follows:

  • 1 System hard drive – 320 Gb
  • 1 Media hard drive – 1Tb
  • 1 RAID 1 backup system (2x 1Tb hard drives that replicate automatically). I use the Western Digital My Book Mirror Edition (affiliate link) for backing up all our media files.

My photo gear

I have the new Canon T2i (affiliate link) and loving it. I discovered that my pictures were out of focus when seen in full resolution. Talked to Canon and they suggested I sent it in for fixing. In about 10 days I had it back fixed indeed. The auto focus feature was not configured correctly and they fixed it. Big difference! Kudos to Canon for taking care of servicing warranty problems very painlessly.

In addition we have a Canon A570IS point and shoot that my wife loves. She still uses the DSLR camera sometimes, but the fact that the point and shoot is small and light makes all the difference for her. She uses it mainly to shoot lots of videos.
