When reading professional photographers blogs and websites I keep coming across this question: is it a good idea to rename your digital pictures files or leave them with the original file name assigned by the camera automatically? The question seems to be a subtle one and the apparent reason for the debate is not immediately obvious. In this article I will be focusing on clearing the issues and identifying the terms.

This used to be the case even during the film era. Sometimes you would just print one copy of each picture in a roll of film and then you would physically select the best pictures to put in your photo album. The rest would end up in some envelope in a shoebox that would start collecting dust. Well, this happens in the digital world as well, except for...the dust. But how do you select your best pictures efficiently in a digital world?

I'm hoping to be able to provide a full review of this product, but for now you can read my interview with Andrea where he describes his own company's product.

If you're new however, to image keywords, then this topic might not seem necessary, at least not now. However, after applying keywords to your images without any strategy, you will end up having a pile of keywords that you can't sort out. Just like folders can become unusable if not named and organized correctly, keywords too can become unusable if not maintained properly. In order to avoid this problem you need to create efficient keywords, or in other words, you need a controlled vocabulary. But how do you create a controlled vocabulary?

Having small children makes taking video clips a lot of fun since they like to look at video clips as well. Learning better ways to organize my video clips is one of my goals for this year. Over the years I created a very efficient method for organizing my pictures, but when it comes to my video clips, I pretty much place them in the same folders where my pictures are. This is the simplest way, but it might not be best way to organize my video clips. In this article I'm exploring different options for organizing your video clips. I'm not sure what is the best method but here are some options I found to work pretty well.

It's funny how we mostly remember the good things about most memories. Memories are the primary driver for me when I go back into my childhood pictures and decide to scan some and make them digital. I have hundreds of pictures from when I was a child. Even though I would like to scan all of them, I usually pick a few to scan and then forget about it for a while. Organizing old scanned pictures is the same as organizing current picture, at least for me. I get many questions however about organizing scanned pictures, and so i'll describe here how I organize them.

Well, not exactly professional as in having to live from our pictures, but a professional photographer because we all have to deal with a ton of pictures. They have been forced by their profession to organize and protect their pictures. They have to! Otherwise, they can't find and refine their products and if they can't do that...well they're done as far as being professional photographers.

In order to accomplish something, you have to start somewhere. This is also the case when it comes to learning how to organize your pictures. I think that's a great question.

Because we live in modern times with digital cameras, babies come with...well, among many other things, lots of pictures. And all these pictures need organization. There are a few things about organzing baby pictures that make the task a little different especially if you're only using folders for organizing your pictures.

This means that they can provide a tot of geographically linked images and they can also create all kinds of interesting relationships between images and photographers.

However, what do you do after asking these foundational questions ? Where do you start analyzing your current workflow? This article will explain the simplest steps of a photography workflow...this is the "ABC" of photography workflow. These are the steps that are part of any photography workflow no matter how simple or complicated. That being said, I also believe that there a few questions that each photographer should ask when contemplating changes to their photography workflow. The standards used for capturing photo keywords and saving them to the actual image files are XMP and IPTC. What do I mean by efficient? It's pretty simple: all I want is the ability to group my keywords into categories or domains. For example: I want
car, boat, ship, carriage, bus and bicycle
to all be grouped into a domain called
transportation
. This seems simple, but I can't really find any decently priced :) software to do that. Now, I was suspecting that Adobe Lightroom might do what I wanted but the price was way too much for me! Eventually I decided to give Lightroom a try and found out why people like it.

Once you get started with Digital Asset Management (DAM) software you will quickly run into another management issue: your keywords. I believe any DAM software user will eventually ask himself the question: how am I supposed to create my keywords? Reading various internet sources on the subject I usually run into two kinds of advice: some say you should just start adding keywords to your images while others say you should be careful and think through your keywords before creating them. Even though it seems that most advice falls in the first category, I happen to fall into the second category. I do believe that you should be careful when you create keywords primarily because if you create too many, then you will have to manage your keywords as well pretty soon...as if managing your pictures is not enough headache. :)

Then this kind of software allows you to locate your favorite pictures by adding labels to these groups of pictures. The problem with this approach is lack of portability. If you want to give a whole folder of pictures to your friend but he's not using the same software then all your favorite pictures will not appear on as favorite on his software.
